Can GLP-1 Agonists Help You Lose Weight? What You Need to Know

You’ve probably heard the buzz about GLP-1 agonists—those so-called “miracle” weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy. They’re being touted as game-changers in the weight loss world, promising significant results for those who’ve struggled for years. But are they really all they’re cracked up to be?

Before you consider jumping on the GLP-1 bandwagon, it’s important to understand both the potential benefits and the hidden risks. Let’s break it down so you can make an informed decision about whether these medications are right for you.

What Are GLP-1 Agonists?

Originally developed to help people with Type 2 diabetes, GLP-1 agonists work by mimicking a hormone in your gut that regulates blood sugar and appetite. This is why they’re so effective at curbing cravings and helping users feel full longer, resulting in significant weight loss for many.

But while their popularity is soaring, so are concerns about long-term use, costs, and potential side effects. (I go into more detail on this in my full video—be sure to check it out!)

Why Are They So Popular?

People are drawn to GLP-1 agonists because they work. Many users report losing 15-20% of their body weight. Add in celebrity endorsements, and it’s no wonder these drugs are trending.

However, what many don’t realize is that compounded versions—often seen as a more accessible alternative—may not be around much longer. With the FDA planning to ban compounded versions once shortages are resolved, affordability could become a huge issue for those relying on these medications.

My Top Concerns About GLP-1 Agonists

While the potential benefits are clear, there are serious risks you need to consider:

  1. Weight Regain
When you stop taking these medications, weight regain is likely—especially if you haven’t built sustainable habits along the way. The reason? These drugs alter your brain chemistry, and once you stop, cravings and appetite can return full force.

  2. Muscle Loss
GLP-1 agonists suppress appetite so effectively that many users unintentionally eat too few calories, leading to muscle loss. This is especially concerning for women in peri-menopause and menopause, who are already at risk for losing muscle due to hormonal changes. Without enough muscle, your metabolism slows down, making it even harder to maintain a healthy weight.

  3. Cost & Accessibility
With costs running into the thousands of dollars per month and compounded versions potentially disappearing, affordability is a major concern for many people.

If You Choose to Use GLP-1 Agonists

If you decide to try GLP-1 agonists, it’s crucial to pair them with the right lifestyle changes for long-term success:

  • Incorporate weight-bearing exercises to preserve muscle mass.

  • Focus on nutrient-dense foods—when your appetite is suppressed, every bite matters.

  • Commit to building lasting habits like consistent exercise, balanced eating, and stress management.

Are GLP-1 Agonists Right for You?

These medications can be life-changing for people with Type 2 diabetes or obesity-related health issues. But if you’re hoping for a quick fix without addressing the root causes of your health struggles, they’re not the answer.
